The Roswell area was the obvious place for such an incident. Not far from the 509 (atom) Bomber Group that dropped the two atom bombs over Japan, quite close to the White Sands rocket test site with the captured German A4/V2 and the multi stage A8 and A9 rockets. Most importantly it was not very far from the Trinity test site at Alamogordo where the first atom bomb was detonated two years previously. The military was obviously prepared to act when such an event should occur. Remember Kenneth Arnold’s experience a short while earlier which was explained away by the authorities. At Roswell the military acted quickly and closed the area, with armed guards. This happened in the middle of the night. Why would a quite ordinary weather balloon create such a fuss? The locals present were threatened with death penalty for high treason is they told outsiders what they had seen. A weather balloon is no big secret. It would have been far more credible and convincing to say that it had been an accident with one of the White Sands test rockets. It was not.
