Doctor Eddie Ganja Here I think No Place to Run is a great UFO album been into UFO since 1974 Currently Reading UFO A Visual Biography by Martin Popoff
Great album.
I’ve been a UFO fan since 1977 when I was 6. This to me has the best songs they’ve ever written. I always thought “Oh this is their Rock and Roll album “ Lights Out was my favorite until my Mom passed 5 years ago and this was a comfort album that helped to feel better. It’s my favorite now but I LOVE everything that Phil has been a part of.
I would also say it’s not that ‘early’ for Chapman. They had already toured post Strangers. I saw them at Hammersmith before the Marquee gigs.
The first UFO studio album I bought, and an instant fave! The writer Steve Gett in Melody Maker wrote: “Alpha Centauri / Lettin’ Go is quite the most spectacular opening to an album since Deep Purple in Rock.” He was right. After that intense hard rock, the brief, plaintive coda is The Battle of Evermore in miniature – so atmospheric. Mystery Train was a new song to me, and was so powerful it took my breath away. The guitar solo is fantastic.
This Fire Burns Tonight appealed a lot on first hearing too – such a feelgood song – and Gone in the Night, where a Whole Lotta Love riff turns into a ballad.
Young Blood is the track I already knew, having the single, and Paul Chapman’s ending solo is a work-of-art. No Place to Run was Geoff Barton’s most-praised song in his cautious (3.5-star) review. Menacing, but so clever. You can picture the railway tracks glistening in the rain as that distant whistle blows, just before Joey makes his last stand.
Take It or Leave It is like a Bad Co ballad. Money Money ups the tempo again, and Anyday ends the album on a real high.
You can find the (now closed) cover garage on Google Maps! It’s near Kings Cross Station in London.
Sorry this is long.
Phil, thanks for this balanced review. I’ve had this for a couple of weeks or so and am thoroughly enjoying the listen. Kind regards
Excellent review. As you stated, this album has several genuinely, for me, top top tier UFO tracks with the title track being just stellar, Letting Go is also superb … I play this album a lot (as I do with the follow up) … those first two Tonka era releases are THE “albums” by UFO that I play (although I do skip Young Blood) whereas, for the Schenker era, I play selected tracks … not the whole album (well, maybe Lights Out album would be the one I’d play) … No Place to Run is a wonderful, eclectic mix that just “works” …. the live set is excellent … note that the Qobuz stream (and presumably Spotify, etc) has the track Makin’ Moves on it … not included on the CD as it would not fit. It is, I believe, on an earlier live compilation set. CMcG Aberdeen Scotland…p.s. saw this tour, and several follow ups, at the Capitol in Aberdeen … superb live band.
the most recent remaster of Judas Priest’s Rocka Rolla was transformative. So much better than the flat, lifeless Gull releases
Saw the tour post Strangers when Tonka joined the band. I was also at the Marquee shows used for this live set. So was so excited for this release.
This album was my entry point for UFO. I had nothing to judge it against at the time and just thought it was great and still do. No idea why some people don’t like the production as it seems fine to me. Having said that, I already have it on vinyl and cd so won’t be buying it again.
